Green Card Lottery Emails Could Be Fake

Immigrants should beware of fraudulent emails telling them they have won the Diversity Visa green card lottery. This is a ploy by thieves who are trying to get immigrants to send them money. The scam artists are requesting that the individual wire or transfer money online as part of a "processing fee".

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) advises that one way to tell if an email is coming from a government agency is to check if the sending address ends with" .gov." The US Department of State (DOS) is the agency that manages the DV green card lottery program, and they notify winners by mail only for the DV 2011 lottery. That lottery is being held for individuals who submitted their entries in 2009. Entrants can also check the status of their entries online at the DV website.
