Family Members of Expats Gain Right to Work in France

Filed in archive Europe by Matthew Schulz on July 19, 2007

France now joins the ranks of countries that offer accompanying family members of expatriates the right work while living in France.

International assignments involve the entire family and not just the employee. Failure to take into consideration the family's needs has led to the failure of many assignments. The right to work while living abroad is an important consideration for many families. Many families rely on income from multiple breadwinners. Many accompanying spouses have their own career. The reasons are many.

France finds itself in good company. Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Sweden, the unitedlinks Kingdom, and the United States all have provisions that now allow qualified family members to engage in local employment.

For an excellent resource on this topic, see the Permits Foundation website.
