Foreign workers can get a green card through employment which enables them to live permanently in the U.S. All you need is an employer who is willing to offer a permanent job and is willing to sponsor you for residency.

The employer sponsored visas comprise of five categories of workers:

Professional with advanced degrees
Professionals without advanced degrees
Employees of the U.S. government abroad
Unskilled workers
Employment creation immigrants

The employment visas are just available to 140,000 every year and more are offered if there are any unused numbers remaining from the family preference category of the previous year. In 2009 alone, 1,44,034 persons became legal permanent resident depending on employment based immigration which represents 12.7% of total number of new permanent residents last year.
