Meatpackers Union Sues USICE Over Raids

Filed in archive Americas by Matthew Schulz on September 14, 2007

The United Food and Commercial Workers Union filed suit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency to prevent federal immigration agents from arresting workers in work site raid.

In December 2006, DHS' ICE raided various Swift & Co. plants and detained large numbers of employees. Now their union is suing the government on the grounds that rights were violated and such raids should end. Six plants were raided and about 1,300 workers arrested by immigration authorities - including US citizens. The union charges that agents violated the workers' Fourth Amendment and US immigration laws.
