In June 2007, vietnam's President Nguyen Minh Triet announced that overseas Vietnamese would be exempt from the normal requirement of applying for a visa to visit the country. The exemption is not yet in effect.
This move is meant to encourage Vietnamese nationals living outside Vietnam to develop relations between Vietnam and the countries where they reside and contribute to the national development and construction of Vietnam.
